As dark clouds rolled in and the air felt heavy with upcoming rain, I couldn’t help but laugh at this mallard duck that seemed to take shelter under this chair.
This afternoon by the lake felt like a Canada goose party! Just look at them all! I also got to see the four goslings again and couldn’t believe how quickly they grew. Their dad chased away any goose that got too close but left me alone. Having heard horror stories about humans and territorial geese, I couldn’t help but feel honoured.
I was already entranced by this landscape when the moon made its appearance. Paired with this mute swan, it felt downright magical. It’s almost like he was posing for me!
Mute swans and swans in general tend to be pretty territorial. Knowing this, I still thought it was quite amusing to see this adult male going up against a group of Canada geese. He was okay as long as they stayed out of the water. Seeing as they’re following his desires, it’s easy to see who really runs the show.
These are some of my favourite photos of my favourite trumpeter swan, Pet. She kept preening and spreading her wings and the lighting conditions were perfect. The sun shone beautifully through her wings and transformed her into some type of ethereal being.
Unfortunately, these are also the last photos I have of her as I’ve been told that she’s no longer with us. I’m not sure what happened to her but I’m devastated. Pet was such a kind soul and never hesitated to waddle up to us and say hi. Sometimes we would sit side by side to enjoy the sounds and sights of the lake. I was looking forward to hopefully seeing her again this winter but it wasn’t meant to be. I’ll miss you, Pet.
The last photo is of the male mute swan making his landing. I heard some loud clapping over the lake and wondered what was going on. A split second later, I realized what I was hearing and had my camera at the ready.
Swans frolicking in the winter sun by Lake Ontario. The last image is my favourite in this set. The translucency in the swan’s wings is so beautiful and elegant.
