Canada geese and a female red-winged blackbird on a spring afternoon by the lake in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A Canada goose shows off its pin feathers during molting season.
I’ve never seen Canada geese growing their feathers back and it was so fascinating to see in person! This happens after they shed their flight feathers during their annual molting period. Flightless for a few weeks, their wings look like this once the new feathers begin to grow back. Truthfully, it kind of gave me the heebie-jeebies and I’m not sure how to explain why. All I know is that I could never get used to the sight of seeing that white straw-like coating whenever they’d settle or flap their wings.
