I never associated bright and vivid sunsets with winter but I’ve been proven wrong this season. My past thinking was mostly due to the sunset happening earlier in the day. This meant I was more likely to miss it. Since our sunsets here happen around 4:30pm at the earliest, it’s more difficult to venture out at that time. Compared to summer, when sunsets are around 9pm at the latest, it becomes quite obvious that the extra time makes quite a difference. Even if there’s no spectacular sunset in the summer, one can still enjoy the warm summer evening instead of trekking home in the cold winter weather.

A snow covered Cherry Beach during winter. I know that it’s always colder by the lake and yet I’m always shocked when it is. I’m so glad I brought my tripod with me as I could warm my hands instead of constantly holding onto my camera.

My first photos of 2022! On New Year’s Day, we decided to go down to Ashbridge’s Bay by the lake for some fresh air. Even though it was very cloudy that day, the water was so turquoise! I was anticipating murky grey or blue water to match the sky but the lake looked beautiful that day. It reminded me of Navy Pier from our trip to Chicago a few years back. Had the lake been its usual cloudy day colour, I don’t think I would have enjoyed taking these photos as much.

The green leaves in Toronto may have been lagging but the ones in Caledon got a head start. I can now see why so many people venture to Caledon, Ontario to do some foliage sightseeing. Something about being surrounded by fall foliage feels so grounding. My favourite views were the winding roads with red and orange trees on either side. If you’re able to visit Caledon during autumn, I highly recommend it!

I’ve never seen a rainbow over the lake quite like this before. Sometimes, you really just have to be at the right place at the right time. We drove down to the lake for some fresh air and ended up finding a rainbow instead! Looks like there’s a pot of gold right across the lake, too!

I was wishing for a vibrant sunset to photograph over the lake and got this moody and gloomy waterscape instead. I was a little disappointed until I got to editing and realized I loved how melancholic this photo ended up looking.

A cloudy day spent at Jack Darling Memorial Park. Even though it was cloudy and a little hazy, I’m pleased with how these photos came out. Personally, I think sunny days are usually boring and unflattering in regards to outdoor photography so I love taking photos when it’s cloudy. I’m looking forward to hopefully visiting this park again once the leaves start to change colour.

You can only imagine my amazement once I stepped on to the beach here not expecting much only to be greeted with this view. The skyline is lit up by the city lights, yes, but the majority of that golden light came from the last remaining glow of sunset. What a sight to see in person! I also adored the way the clouds were reflected against the lake’s surface and how beautiful they were lit up.
I don’t usually experiment with long exposures but seeing how lovely these came out makes me want to reconsider. I initially took my shots without a tripod and didn’t really like how they were turning out. I was running out of time and considered it a lost cause. Luckily, my brother was determined to get a shot and he ran to the car to grab the tripod. Great intuition on his part as these images wouldn’t exist otherwise. It’s been so long since I’ve taken a nighttime city shot and now I’m motivated to try and take more!
